A British national with the name David has been deported for 10 years from the Maldives after the investigation has proved that he had spread Christianity in in Th. Kinbidhoo.

The news was confirmed by Ilyas Hussain Ibrahim, head of the Department of Immigration and Emigration.

Answering to a question by Miadhu Daily, Dr. Abdul Majeed Abdul Baari, Minister of Islamic Affairs said that actions cannot be taken on such cases as the law does not prescribe any punishment for such activities. Although missionary work is criminalized, no penalties were prescribed in the law, according to the Ministry.

Even the law on the protection of the religious unity does not prescribe any penalties for such offenses. “The law on the protection of religious unity only limits what the religious scholars can say or write. They do not mention anything about spreading other religions and have not prescribed any penalties on that. We can’t event judge if the law is intended for locals or foreigners” he said.

He also said that these provisions are included in the new regulation which had been sent to Attorney-General’s Office for approval. He also said that once the new regulation is approved it will be easy to take action against those who spread other religions in the Maldives.
