Protest and demonstrations are understandably part of the democratic governing process. However the new regime of Mohamed Nasheed and his party MDP supporters, get very insecure every time they see even a handful of protesters gather in the streets.

Hundreds and thousands of people took to the streets of the capital of Maldives Male’ giving a deaf ear to the warnings and threats given by the highly violent activists that are part of the current regime and President Nasheed’s inner circle of friends.

This is the first time so many people joined the protest, after the President and his regime, came to power. Since coming to power they continuously exercised, and resorted to a culture of using baton and tear gas as well as arbitrary arrests to deal with even gatherings that constitute scores of people.

Peaceful expression of political dissatisfaction since the new government came to power, is made impossible, also because of the nuisance caused by the regime supporters. They attack, they defame, they threaten and always cause injuries to the protestors, although; always the methods used by the main opposition is nothing but peaceful.

The irony of the situation is when the current regime of MDP were in opposition, they used to put fire and destroy government buildings, attack the Police and MNDF officers that try to intervene, but all those behaviours were ok when they were in opposition. They; in fact started this culture of violence. They used to be loud, they were unruly, and when they were in oppostion they used to come out almost every other day. However the current main opposition in power at that time and their supporters, never interfered with the MDP’s activities.

On the other hand since the MDP and President Nasheed came to power a year ago, there is a rumour brewing that the reason why he released half of the prisoners from the Maldives prison within days of becoming President was to use them to handle, protests, demonstrations and diffuse any kind of activities that the main opposition might use to protest against him and his regime.

This is believable, as sometimes we have seen very violent unruly supporters of Mohamed Nasheed, always the same set of people gather outside Parliament, to influence their debates, outside the Justice building to influence sentencing’s, always resorting to violence, expressing in favour of the regime and its fellow members involved.

Fear mongering is the duty of the MDP force and many people believe they are paid by the President and his party huge amounts of money to do that.

However today is a historical day as, the main opposition was able to gather a huge crowd comprising of thousands. Although this did not deter the regime’s paramilitary group, and they attacked the demonstrators, they weren’t able to hurt as many people as they did in the past.

Scores of demonstrators were attacked by the regime’s fear mongering force and victims received various levels of injuries. The woman victim was the only one reported by the media as seriously injured as she was bleeding heavily from a blow to her head, and was immediately taken to the hospital.

Discontent against the MDP regime and President Nasheed, although is enormous, the people scared of the dangerous methods of the MDP activists, refrain from participating in rallies organised by the main opposition. This is obviously changing.

The MDP and President Nasheed many people now feel lacks credibility. They are becoming very unpopular by the day due to their chosen preference of their Western friends methods of governance, and promotion of their agendas including their religious agendas. Citizens are also beleaguered by the government due to the deterioration of the economic and social conditions under the regime including the unprecedented levels of murders that are occurring every other day in the three hundred thousand people population.

The pent up emotions that came out today and the sheer number that joined today’s demonstration, for the first time scared the MDP regime, and President Nasheed; realising that their government can be ousted and DRP/PA coalition might ride back to power before their term ends.

The demonstrators continuously called for the politically, economically failed President and his party to step down. The event although was heavily marred by the rather large amount of Police and MNDF presence, the people kept screaming against the injustices of the regime, acts taken against the people with total disregard including, sacking of employees, salary reductions, establishing relations with Israel so and so forth.

Today’s demonstration gave a strong signal to the President and his party of an imminent collapse of their regime. Apart from the legitimacy crisis that are over-shadowing this government, due to their strong liaisons with foreign powers, the people struggling with economic and social depravity indicated that they are capable of a revolution if this government does not become democratic, transparent and accountable to the Maldivian people.
